Polish Pickup August: Musicals (makers A-C)

Hello hello fellow nail geeks! Today I present to you the reason for my quiet-ness. I’m usually pretty active in the community during the summer time but I finally get to bring you the first of a series. This is a mama-jama of amazingness and I am absolutely honored to be your blogger of the month for Polish Pickup: August. The theme is musicals, and due to this series being absolutely jam packed with information and photos I’m going to be a little less rambley than usual so we can get down to business (pffft).  I have almost all polishes on deck being offered for the month as well as a few other items related to nail care that will be launching on the new non polish website: Indie Pickup. *post on Indie Pickup coming soon!

If you’re new to polish pickup, it is a wonderful concept that brings our love of themed boxes together without the stress of getting colors or products that wouldn’t necessarily be your cup of tea. Each month, fans vote on a theme and a plethora of makers come together to create products that are inspired by inspirations based on said theme. You can choose whatever you want for your very own box and it all ships for a flat rate depending on your country of residence! In this post, I will go through the amazing makers starting with A-C, or 6 Harts to Cuticula!

6 Harts: Sunrise Sunset

Official description: a caramel brown that is almost burnt orange. It has red and black flakies, scattered copper holo and orange shimmer

Inspiration: Fiddler on the Roof

Price: $10

Cap: 100

Swatches show two coats with topcoat. Formula has a medium feel and applies nice and opaque. The base has a light chocolate feel to me, with orange undertones. The orange shimmer gives a nice overall sparkly effect that created a lovely inner glow. This is such a rich color, reminds me of caramel candies. The finished look gives that nice ‘thick’ appearance that I favor when painting my nails.

Alter Ego: Dance Like No One Is Watching

Official description: a pink leaning brown that some see as rose gold with pink & green sparks

Inspiration: Fantasia- the segment Dance of the Hours

Price: $8

Cap: None

Swatches show two coats with topcoat. The formula is dense in the best way possible! This an overly full coverage polish that I totally was not expecting when eyeballing the bottle. The base (on me) has a lovely champagne feel, and the sparks look like a foil effect, almost a reflective quality. No texture after topcoat, and super twinkly.

Anchor and Heart Lacquer: No One Alive Who is More Youer Than You

Official description: a creamy turquoise/aqua color with blue shimmer provides the perfectly playful base for an assortment of bright glitters in various sizes and shapes.

Inspiration: Suessical Musical

Price: $11

Cap: None

Swatches show three very thin coats with topcoat. This one is easily a two coater, with a buttery formula that builds easily. The glitters picked up nicely, and I had no need to fish for them. The blue shimmer is hiding in my photos (you can kind of see it in my macro shot), but it has a light glowey effect in person. Honestly, I can’t think of a better polish for Seussical Musical.

B Polished: Jellicle Queens

Official description: a red-orange multichrome magnetic polish with color shifting flakes.

Inspiration: The Broadway Show Cats

Price: $13 with bling ring magnet, $12 without magnet

Cap: 100

Swatches show two coats with the bling ring applied on the second coat. The formula is super smooth and nice and thick. For my swatches, I used the flat side of the triangle attached to the ring so that it formed the X pattern. The base is such a rich almost burned orange, and the magnetic particles easily shift to a pink and gold.

Baroness X: 2% Butterscotch Ripple

Official description: a purple jelly with gold magnetic ripple, has pink to green shifting aurora pigment and a sprinkling of holo.

Inspiration: Inspired by the invention room scene in the 1971 musical Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Willy Wonka, played by Gene Wilder, exclaims “Invention my dear friends is 93% perspiration, 6% electricity, 4%evaporation, and 2 % butterscotch ripple.”

Price: $11.50

Cap: None

Swatches show three thin coats with a magnet applied on the third coat. I really don’t think I’m showing this beauty off to its full potential. The base is a Willy Wonka wrapper purple with the magnetic particles appearing as a rich butterscotch gold. The aurora pigments easily shift from pink to gold on tilt. It does dry down glossy so I think any topcoat will do.

Bees Knees: See It All Connects

Official description: a midnight blue full of green/blue/purple magnetic multichrome microflakes, and dense holo flakes.

Inspiration: The Office- episode with Andy’s Play

Price: $13

Cap: None

Swatches show three very thin coats with the magnet applied on the third coat. This is rich in formula, I definitely went overkill on the coats but I knew there was a lot going on here and wanted to be sure that the magnetic stripe could be seen. Of course it’s hiding here. I easily see the green, blue and purple shift across my nails and the flakes are just so in your face. The cat’s eye is subtle in my opinion (and application style) but there’s a lot to see on this polish. In direct light it’s very sparkly and has loads of depth.

Bliss Polish: Burlesque

Official description: a gold microfleck holo

Inspiration: Burlesque (the movie)

Price: $11.50

Cap: 100

Swatches show two coats with topcoat. This one is a secret favorite of mine. The microflecks gives a reflective appearance, and though I am picky with golds (having yellow undertones to my skin) I think it flattered me really well. It’s that bright type of gold that really shines through. Formula was smooth and easy to work with and the holographic effect was nice and strong in person. In dim indoor lights (I swear I’m the only one with awful house lighting) you’ll see the little flecks across your nails stronger.

Blue Eyed Girl Lacquer: It’s Good

Official description: a candy apple red with flakes and shimmer

Inspiration: Disney’s Enchanted

Price: $12

Cap: None

Swatches show two coats with topcoat. The formula is very rich and feels on the heavy side but applied wonderfully. I’d describe the base as flirting with a neon red, but has orange undertones to it. The shimmer give just that little something extra on your nails for a light sparkle effect. This one does dry down a little satin like, so use a glossy topcoat to get the shimmers to pop.

Blush Lacquers: America!

Official description: a lavender jelly base with purple to blue shifting microflake shimmer, larger red to gold shifting micro flakes, and scattered holo

Inspiration: West Side Story

Price: $13

Cap: None

Swatches show three thin coats with topcoat. Formula has a light feel, but built perfectly at two. I have wide nails, so finishes like this I will almost always go for that third coat. I tried to get the shimmer and its shift to pop as much as I see it in person, so you’ll just have to trust me on this. There’s a lovely inner glow and the flakes laid down flat for me. No texture after topcoat and the scattered holo really rounds out the final look. The base is a gorgeous pinky-lavender that almost feels like a neutral on me.

Bohemian Polish: Dreamland

Official description: a blue to purple shifting multichrome polish with color-shifting magenta to blue micro flakies and gold to fuschia UCC flakies

Inspiration: Miss Saigon

Price: $12

Cap: None

Swatches show two coats with topcoat. Formula felt on the heavy side but applied evenly. I assure you, this will appear a deep purple in normal lighting but due to the overly bright lights in my light box, you’re seeing the blue shift here. The flakes give a pond like effect and you can see them on the top most layer as well as hiding in your first layer. This one is really intense, you guys. I easily saw the purple to blue shift with a strong amber on extreme angles.

Cameo Colors: Floating Lips

Official description: a sultry candy apple red, full of red/orange/gold shimmer, with a semi-linear holographic flare.

Inspiration: Rocky Horror Picture Show Opening

Price: $11

Cap: None

Swatches show two coats with topcoat. The formula is like a hot knife cutting through butter. This is damn near a one coater, and very intense in person. In my head, I’ve been calling it the perfect ‘Santa suit’ shade and the shimmer is very strong- giving a super glow on my nails. It dries down glossy so any topcoat will do. The holo almost blends in with the shimmer so it’s this super burning ember look. If I’m honest, this is easily in my top three reds I’ve ever worn.

Chaotic Glitz: Remember Me

Official description: Jelly based thermal that goes from purple to colorless. Filled with neon colored matte glitters in different shapes and silver and burgundy micro holo glitters along with iridescent chameleon shifting micro glitter. Every order gets the sugar skull sticker that matches the logo.

Inspiration: Coco

Price: $12.50

Cap: 120

Swatches show three coats with topcoat. I always hesitate to discuss my coats on polishes like this, since the clear transition always throws me off no matter how prepared I am and I usually end up over doing it because my eyes can’t tell- I’m a mess! The formula is super squishy feeling and the glitters are very flat against my nails after topcoat. I almost want to call this a tri-thermal since I swear I saw blue during the transition shots. This thermal is very sensitive so I got some artsy-fartsy shots of the change. This polish is super fun, and I think it’d look great in experiments with various undies. I included the bottle shot here, because every order will get the adorable sugar skull sticker.

Chirality: Radioactive Mambo

Official description: a white jelly with green shimmer and various sizes and shades of green glitter with accents of black

Inspiration: The Horror of Party Beach

Price: $10

Cap: None

Swatches show three thin coats with topcoat. Formula is on the medium side and built perfectly opaque at three coats for me. With the various size of glitters in here, I went for thin coats just in case to be sure everything laid down flat. This dried down semi glossy for me, so I’d recommend a glossy topcoat. The green shimmer is being a touch subtle in my photos, but in the macro shot you can see it towards the back of my nail.

Colores de Carol: The King Roars

Official description: a mustard yellow with UCC flakes, iridescent chameleon glitter and Aurora shimmer.

Inspiration: The Broadway Musical- The Lion King

Price: $11.50

Cap: None

Swatches show two coats with topcoat. Formula was very opaque and leans on the medium/heavy side but was easy to spread on the nail. This applied like butter, from the first coat there was straight color. The base is a gorgeous rich mustard color, I absolutely did not catch the iridescent glitters, but they give an interesting sparkle that appears red mostly to me. You can sort of see them in my macro, but they were so stubborn to show up on the camera. You’ll want to mind your brush strokes and not over work it so the flakes lay down for you. I’d recommend a good glossy topcoat to even everything out. I’ve yet to see a color like this, definitely one to see in person!

Colors by Llarowe: I Dreamed a Dream

Official description: a black based multi chrome holo with strong red shimmer and Aurora red to green pigment with gold shimmer

Inspiration: Les Miserables

Price: $11

Cap: None

Swatches show two coats with topcoat. This was another very near one coater for me. The formula is very rich and smooth, and I can see those with shorter nails and a slightly heavier hand being able to get away with one coat. The base is black, but the shimmer stands out so strong in it, definitely mimicking the illusive unicorn pee look (though it’s confirmed not- and the particles are larger here). The shimmers create an easy shift from the primary red, with green on tilt and gold on extreme angles. My lowlight shot (second pic) I think shows what I’m seeing in person best.

Crows Toes: Tell Me About It… STUD

Official description: a black Jelly base with red shimmer & assorted coordinating microglitters

Inspiration: Grease- the final number, specifically Sandy’s outfit

Price: $12

Cap: None

Swatches show three thin coats with topcoat. This dried down insanely glossy, so I’d say feel free to use any topcoat. I can safely say this was the most difficult polish to photograph in all of the polishes I reviewed this month. It’s looking subtle here, but trust me there’s so much going on when you see it in person. It is insanely sparkly, like a constant twinkle in any lighting and the red shimmer gives an interesting dynamic with the glitters; there’s almost a red to gold shift. It’s not shy, at all. This was another very buttery feel when applying, but it builds easily and just trust me when I say it’s so much more than what my photos are showing. (Black polishes are my Achilles heel in photography).

Crystal Knockout: The Tale You Tell

Official description: a deep, dark teal with gold aurora, gold flakies, and teal shimmer

Inspiration: Into The Woods

Price: $11

Cap: 155

Swatches show three thin coats with topcoat. This build very well for me, and those with shorter nails can easily get away with two coats. There’s a lovely gold depth to this one, almost a gold and blue glow on tilt. This beauty is packed with goodies between the flakes and shimmers and I’m pleased to report this was smooth to the touch after topcoat. In person the flakies are prominent, and the base compliments very well in the final look. I liked how the pigments give that ‘thicker’ look on your nails, which is how I prefer my manis to appear.

Cuticula: silk base coat scented in snozberries

Official description: keep your mani lasting long, shiny, and smelling delicious with this unique blend made up of pure imagination.

Inspiration: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Price: $8.50

Cap: none

I’ll admit, I’m brand spanking new to Cuticula’s goodies but this base coat is freaking awesome. I know in all of my naked shots you’re seeing me apply oils, and various other products to demonstrate moisturizing abilities; but you guys don’t see how porous or damaged my free edge is. I don’t have peeling issues, but due to the porosity of my nails and constant pulling up of peel off base coat for swatching I have some not so ideal nails when they are just by themselves. You can see some of the damage on my free edge in the pics below. I almost wish I’d show a shot of how they look bare without anything on them. In completely honesty, I’m very impressed with this base. I’m wearing two thin coats here. It gives a nourished look and has a jelly feel. I wish this was around when I first started taking care of my nails, those that are trying to grow out their claws I suggest giving this a try. The scent is strong, but not overpowering and lingered for quite some time when I had it on my dominant hand. Remember, strawberry and crisp.

Cuticula: Timeless topcoat scented in snozberries

Official description: keep your mani lasting long, shiny, and smelling delicious with this unique blend made up of pure imagination.

Inspiration: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Price: $8.50

Cap: 150

I tend to run nail things through a gauntlet when experimenting for the first time with a new product. I picked a China Glaze. Love them but damn they’re always so patchy during application. This one dries down semi matte too. Now, this isn’t your average topcoat. You’ve got to switch it up a little and get a good sized bead on your brush and glide it over the polish. Don’t overdo your strokes and it creates a very high gloss finish. Here, it evened out that evil formula. I want to call it like an oily appearance- but I fear that gives a negative connotation. It almost looks like a gel topcoat to me. After these shots I did the glitter gradient and topcoated again with Timeless as it was my last swatch for that day so I went about my business with this on and the scent indeed lingers. I kept smelling it several hours after use.
